 कर्म Task(Performance)

एक राजा बड़ा धर्मात्मा, न्यायकारी और परमेश्वर का भक्त था। उसने ठाकुरजी का मंदिर बनवाया और एक ब्राह्मण को उसका पुजारी नियुक्त किया। वह ब्राह्मण बड़ा सदाचारी, धर्मात्मा और संतोषी था। वह राजा से कभी कोई याचना नहीं करता था, राजा भी उसके स्वभाव पर बहुत प्रसन्न था।

उसे राजा के मंदिर में पूजा करते हुए बीस वर्ष गुजर गये। उसने कभी भी राजा से किसी प्रकार का कोई प्रश्न नहीं किया।

राजा के यहाँ एक लड़का पैदा हुआ। राजा ने उसे पढ़ा लिखाकर विद्वान बनाया और बड़ा होने पर उसकी शादी एक सुंदर राजकन्या के साथ करा दी। शादी करके जिस दिन राजकन्या को अपने राजमहल में लाये उस रात्रि में राजकुमारी को नींद न आयी। वह इधर-उधर घूमने लगी जब अपने पति के पलंग के पास आयी तो क्या देखती है कि हीरे जवाहरात जड़ित मूठेवाली एक तलवार पड़ी है।

जब उस राजकन्या ने देखने के लिए वह तलवार म्यान में से बाहर निकाली, तब तीक्ष्ण धारवाली और बिजली के समान प्रकाशवाली तलवार देखकर वह डर गयी व डर के मारे उसके हाथ से तलवार गिर पड़ी और राजकुमार की गर्दन पर जा लगी। राजकुमार का सिर कट गया और वह मर गया। राजकन्या पति के मरने का बहुत शोक करने लगी।

 उसने परमेश्वर से प्रार्थना की कि 'हे प्रभु ! मुझसे अचानक यह पाप कैसे हो गया? पति की मृत्यु मेरे ही हाथों हो गयी। आप तो जानते ही हैं, परंतु सभा में मैं सत्य न कहूँगी क्योंकि इससे मेरे माता-पिता और सास-ससुर को कलंक लगेगा तथा इस बात पर कोई विश्वास भी न करेगा।'

प्रातःकाल में जब पुजारी कुएँ पर स्नान करने आया तो राजकन्या ने उसको देखकर विलाप करना शुरु किया और इस प्रकार कहने लगीः "मेरे पति को कोई मार गया।" लोग इकट्ठे हो गये और राजा साहब आकर पूछने लगेः "किसने मारा है?"

वह कहने लगीः "मैं जानती तो नहीं कि कौन था। परंतु उसे ठाकुरजी के मंदिर में जाते देखा था" राजा समेत सब लोग ठाकुरजी के मंदिर में आये तो ब्राह्मण को पूजा करते हुए देखा। उन्होंने उसको पकड़ लिया और पूछाः "तूने राजकुमार को क्यों मारा?"

ब्राह्मण ने कहाः "मैंने राजकुमार को नहीं मारा। मैंने तो उनका राजमहल भी नहीं देखा है। इसमें ईश्वर साक्षी हैं। बिना देखे किसी पर अपराध का दोष लगाना ठीक नहीं।"

ब्राह्मण की तो कोई बात ही नहीं सुनता था। कोई कुछ कहता था तो कोई कुछ.... राजा के दिल में बार-बार विचार आता था कि यह ब्राह्मण निर्दोष है परंतु बहुतों के कहने पर राजा ने ब्राह्मण से कहाः

"मैं तुम्हें प्राणदण्ड तो नहीं देता लेकिन जिस हाथ से तुमने मेरे पुत्र को तलवार से मारा है, तेरा वह हाथ काटने का आदेश देता हूँ।"

ऐसा कहकर राजा ने उसका हाथ कटवा दिया। इस पर ब्राह्मण बड़ा दुःखी हुआ और राजा को अधर्मी जान उस देश को छोड़कर विदेश में चला गया। वहाँ वह खोज करने लगा कि कोई विद्वान ज्योतिषी मिले तो बिना किसी अपराध हाथ कटने का कारण उससे पूछूँ।

किसी ने उसे बताया कि काशी में एक विद्वान ज्योतिषी रहते हैं। तब वह उनके घर पर पहुँचा। ज्योतिषी कहीं बाहर गये थे, उसने उनकी धर्मपत्नी से पूछाः "माताजी ! आपके पति ज्योतिषी जी महाराज कहाँ गये हैं?"

तब उस स्त्री ने अपने मुख से अयोग्य, असह्य दुर्वचन कहे, जिनको सुनकर वह ब्राह्मण हैरान हुआ और मन ही मन कहने लगा कि "मैं तो अपना हाथ कटने का कारण पूछने आया था, परंतु अब इनका ही हाल पहले पूछूँगा।

" इतने में ज्योतिषी आ गये। घर में प्रवेश करते ही ब्राह्मणी ने अनेक दुर्वचन कहकर उनका तिरस्कार किया। परंतु ज्योतिषी जी चुप रहे और अपनी स्त्री को कुछ भी नहीं कहा। तदनंतर वे अपनी गद्दी पर आ बैठे। ब्राह्मण को देखकर ज्योतिषी ने उनसे कहाः "कहिये, ब्राह्मण देवता ! कैसे आना हुआ?"

"आया तो था अपने बारे में पूछने के लिए परंतु पहले आप अपना हाल बताइये कि आपकी पत्नी अपनी जुबान से आपका इतना तिरस्कार क्यों करती है? जो किसी से भी नहीं सहा जाता और आप सहन कर लेते हैं, इसका कारण है?"

"यह मेरी स्त्री नहीं, मेरा कर्म है। दुनिया में जिसको भी देखते हो अर्थात् भाई, पुत्र, शिष्य, पिता, गुरु, सम्बंधी - जो कुछ भी है, सब अपना कर्म ही है। यह स्त्री नहीं, मेरा किया हुआ कर्म ही है और यह भोगे बिना कटेगा नहीं।

अवश्यमेव भोक्तव्यं कृतं कर्म शुभाशुभम्।

नाभुक्तं क्षीयते कर्म कल्पकोटिशतेरपि॥

'अपना किया हुआ जो भी कुछ शुभ-अशुभ कर्म है, वह अवश्य ही भोगना पड़ता है। बिना भोगे तो सैंकड़ों-करोड़ों कल्पों के गुजरने पर भी कर्म नहीं टल सकता।' इसलिए मैं अपने कर्म खुशी से भोग रहा हूँ और अपनी स्त्री की ताड़ना भी नहीं करता, ताकि आगे इस कर्म का फल न भोगना पड़े।"

"महाराज ! आपने क्या कर्म किया था?"

"सुनिये, पूर्वजन्म में मैं कौआ था और मेरी स्त्री गधी थी। इसकी पीठ पर फोड़ा था, फोड़े की पीड़ा से यह बड़ी दुःखी थी और कमजोर भी हो गयी थी। मेरा स्वभाव बड़ा दुष्ट था, इसलिए मैं इसके फोड़े में चोंच मारकर इसे ज्यादा दुःखी करता था। जब दर्द के कारण यह कूदती थी तो इसकी फजीहत देखकर मैं खुश होता था। मेरे डर के कारण यह सहसा बाहर नहीं निकलती थी किंतु मैं इसको ढूँढता फिरता था। यह जहाँ मिले वहीं इसे दुःखी करता था।

आखिर मेरे द्वारा बहुत सताये जाने पर त्रस्त होकर यह गाँव से दस-बारह मील दूर जंगल में चली गयी। वहाँ गंगा जी के किनारे सघन वन में हरा-हरा घास खाकर और मेरी चोटों से बचकर सुखपूर्वक रहने लगी। लेकिन मैं इसके बिना नहीं रह सकता था। इसको ढूँढते-ढूँढते मैं उसी वन में जा पहुँचा और वहाँ इसे देखते ही मैं इसकी पीठ पर जोर-से चोंच मारी तो मेरी चोंच इसकी हड्डी में चुभ गयी।

इस पर इसने अनेक प्रयास किये, फिर भी चोंच न छूटी। मैंने भी चोंच निकालने का बड़ा प्रयत्न किया मगर न निकली। 'पानी के भय से ही यह दुष्ट मुझे छोड़ेगा।' ऐसा सोचकर यह गंगाजी में प्रवेश कर गयी परंतु वहाँ भी मैं अपनी चोंच निकाल न पाया। 

आखिर में यह बड़े प्रवाह में प्रवेश कर गयी। गंगा का प्रवाह तेज होने के कारण हम दोनों बह गये और बीच में ही मर गये। तब गंगा जी के प्रभाव से यह तो ब्राह्मणी बनी और मैं बड़ा भारी ज्योतिषी बना। अब वही मेरी स्त्री हुई। जो मेरे मरणपर्यन्त अपने मुख से गाली निकालकर मुझे दुःख देगी और मैं भी अपने पूर्वकर्मों का फल समझकर सहन करता रहूँगा, इसका दोष नहीं मानूँगा क्योंकि यह किये हुए कर्मों का ही फल है। इसलिए मैं शांत रहता हूँ। अब अपना प्रश्न पूछो।"

ब्राह्मण ने अपना सब समाचार सुनाया और पूछाः "अधर्मी पापी राजा ने मुझ निरपराध का हाथ क्यों कटवाया?"

ज्योतिषीः "राजा ने आपका हाथ नहीं कटवाया, आपके कर्म ने ही आपका हाथ कटवाया है।"

"किस प्रकार?"

"पूर्वजन्म में आप एक तपस्वी थे और राजकन्या गौ थी तथा राजकुमार कसाई था। वह कसाई जब गौ को मारने लगा, तब गौ बेचारी जान बचाकर आपके सामने से जंगल में भाग गयी। पीछे से कसाई आया और आप से पूछा कि "इधर कोई गाय तो नहीं गया है?"

आपने प्रण कर रखा था कि 'झूठ नहीं बोलूँगा।' अतः जिस तरफ गौ गयी थी, उस तरफ आपने हाथ से इशारा किया तो उस कसाई ने जाकर गौ को मार डाला। गंगा के किनारे वह उसकी चमड़ी निकाल रहा था, इतने में ही उस जंगल से शेर आया और गौ एवं कसाई दोनों को खाकर गंगाजी के किनारे ही उनकी हड्डियाँ उसमें बह गयीं। 

गंगाजी के प्रताप से कसाई को राजकुमार और गौ को राजकन्या का जन्म मिला एवं पूर्वजन्म के किये हुए उस कर्म ने एक रात्रि के लिए उन दोनों को इकट्ठा किया। क्योंकि कसाई ने गौ को हंसिये से मारा था, इसी कारण राजकन्या के हाथों अनायास ही तलवार गिरने से राजकुमार का सिर कट गया और वह मर गया। 

इस तरह अपना फल देकर कर्म निवृत्त हो गया। तुमने जो हाथ का इशारा रूप कर्म किया था, उस पापकर्म ने तुम्हारा हाथ कटवा दिया है। इसमें तुम्हारा ही दोष है किसी अन्य का नहीं, ऐसा निश्चय कर सुखपूर्वक रहो।"

कितना सहज है ज्ञानसंयुक्त जीवन ! यदि हम इस कर्मसिद्धान्त को मान लें और जान लें तो पूर्वकृत घोर से घोर कर्म का फल भोगते हुए भी हम दुःखी नहीं होंगे बल्कि अपने चित्त की समता बनाये रखने में सफल होंगे। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण इस समत्व के अभ्यास को ही 'समत्व योग' संबोधित करते हैं, जिसमें दृढ़ स्थिति प्राप्त होने पर मनुष्य कर्मबंधन से मुक्त हो जाता है।

A king was very devout, judicious and a devotee of God. He built Thakurji's temple and appointed a Brahmin as his priest. That Brahmin was very virtuous, righteous and contented. He never pleaded with the king, the king was also very pleased with his nature.

Twenty years passed while worshiping him in the king's temple. He never asked any kind of question to the king.

A boy was born to the king. The king made him a scholar by reading and after growing up, married him with a beautiful Rajakanya. The princess did not sleep the night she got Rajakanya to her palace after getting married. When she came around to her husband's bed, what did she see that there was a sword with diamond-studded jewels?

When that Rajakanya took the sword out of the sheath to see it, she was frightened to see the sharp-edged and light-edged sword, and in fear, the sword fell from her hand and went to the prince's neck. The prince was beheaded and died. Rajakanya started mourning her husband very much.

 He prayed to God that 'Lord! How did I suddenly commit this sin? My husband died at my hands. You know, but I will not tell the truth in the meeting because it will stigma my parents and in-laws and nobody will believe it. '

In the morning when the priest came to bathe at the well, Rajakanya started mourning after seeing him and said: "Someone killed my husband." People gathered and Raja Saheb came and asked: "Who has killed?"

She started saying: "I don't know who it was. But I saw him going to Thakurji's temple" Everyone including the king came to Thakurji's temple and saw the Brahmin worshiping him. They caught him and asked: "Why did you kill the prince?"

The Brahmin said: "I have not killed the prince. I have not even seen his palace. God witnesses in this. It is not right to blame anyone without looking at them."

Nobody would listen to a Brahmin. When someone said something, someone said something… The King used to think again and again that this Brahmin is innocent but at the behest of many, the king said to the Brahmin:

"I do not give you death, but the hand with which you have killed my son with the sword, I order your hand to be cut off."

Saying this, the king got his hand amputated. At this the Brahmin became very sad and the king was left unrighteous and went abroad. There he began to search that if a scholar finds an astrologer, I should ask him the reason for cutting off any crime.

Someone told him that a scholar astrologer lives in Kashi. Then he reached their house. When the astrologer went out somewhere, he asked his wife: "Mother, where has your husband Astrologer Ji Maharaj gone?"

Then the woman said unqualified, unbearable misbehavior from her mouth, which the Brahmin was shocked to hear and said in his heart that "I had come to ask the reason for cutting my hand, but now I will ask about it only first."

"So the astrologers came. On entering the house, the Brahmin disrespected them by saying many misdeeds. But the astrologer kept quiet and said nothing to his woman. After that he sat on his throne. Seeing the Brahmin, the astrologer told him: "Say, Brahmin deity! what makes you come here?"

"I came to ask about myself, but first you tell us your situation, why does your wife despise you so much with her tongue? The reason why it is not endured by anyone and you can bear it?"

"It is not my woman, it is my karma. Whoever you see in the world, that is, brother, son, disciple, father, guru, relative - whatever is there, everything is your own karma. It is not my woman, my karma is done And it will not be cut without being eaten.

Avashyameva Bhoktavyam Krita Karma Shubhashubham.

Nabhuktam kshyate karma kalpkotishterapi॥

'Whatever is a good demeanor done, it must be suffered. Without suffering, karma cannot be avoided even after passing hundreds of crores of kalpas. Therefore, I am enjoying my karma happily and do not even chastise my woman, so that the fruit of this karma is not to be suffered any further. "

"Maharaj! What deed did you do?"

"Listen, I was a crow in a previous life and my woman was a donkey. It had a boil on its back, it was very sad due to the pain of the boil and also became weak. My nature was very wicked, so I berated it by boiling it. I used to grieve. When I jumped because of the pain, I was happy to see it. I was not able to get out of it because of my fear, but I used to search for it. It grieved it wherever I found it.

Finally, after being persecuted a lot by me, she went into the forest ten-twelve miles away from the village. There, eating green grass in the dense forest on the banks of Ganga ji and escaping from my injuries, I started living happily. But I could not live without it. In search of it, I reached the same forest and upon seeing it there, I hit a beak on its back, and my beak got pierced in its bone.

He made several attempts at this, yet the beak was not missed. I too tried hard to get the beak out, but it did not come out. "This wicked one will leave me out of fear of water." Thinking like this, it entered Gangaji but even there I could not get my beak out.

Eventually it entered a large current. Due to the fast flow of Ganges, both of us were swept away and died in between. Then with the influence of Ganga ji, she became a Brahmin and I became a great astrologer. Now she became my woman. Those who will abuse me from my mouth after my death, and I will continue to bear the fruit of my past actions, will not accept the blame for this, because it is the result of the deeds done. That's why I keep calm. Now ask your question. "

The Brahmin told all his news and asked: "Why did the unrighteous sinner king cut the hand of innocent me?"

Astrologer: "The king did not cut your hand, your karma has cut your hand."

"In the previous birth you were an ascetic and Rajakanya was a cow and a prince was a butcher. When the butcher started killing the cow, the cow poor saved her life and ran into the forest in front of you. The butcher came from behind and asked you" Some cow Isn't it gone? "

You pledged that 'I will not lie.' So, when you pointed your hand to the side where the cow had gone, the butcher went and killed the cow. He was removing his skin on the banks of the Ganges, in the same time a lion came out of that forest and after eating both cow and butcher, his bones got swept away on the banks of Ganga.

The butcher got the prince and Gau the birth of Rajakanya with the splendor of Gangaji and the deeds done in the previous birth gathered the two of them for one night. Because the butcher had killed Gau with a laugh, the prince's head was cut off due to an unintentional sword falling at the hands of Rajakanya and he died.

In this way, karma was retired by giving its fruit. The sinful work you performed as a gesture of your hand has got your hand cut off. Your only fault in this is that of no other, make a decision and live happily. "

How easy is life of knowledge! If we obey this ritual and know, we will not be sad even if we suffer the fruits of the deeds from the predestined ghoul, but will be able to maintain the equanimity of our mind. Lord Sri Krishna addresses the practice of this samvata only as 'samatva yoga', in which a man becomes free from adversity upon attaining a firm position.
